How to build a habit without another app

Streaks are good at creating one thing: the feeling of having lost one. A page on the wall and a rule for bad days does the job with less drama.

The short answer

Setting it up on paper

  1. Write the habit as an action with a time and a place: 'ten minutes of Spanish at the kitchen table after breakfast'.
  2. Draw a month of boxes. Keep the pen where you will sit - visible, not in a drawer.
  3. Choose the smallest version that still counts. On bad days, you do that version; this is how a habit survives a bad week.
  4. Mark the day when it is done, not when you plan to do it.
  5. Once a month, look at the pattern: which weekday fails most often, and what you could move.

The rule for missing a day

Missing once is normal. Missing twice is how habits end, so the second day is the one that has to be protected - even at the smallest version.

Never renegotiate the habit while you are tired. Change it on a Sunday morning, deliberately, and write down the new version.

Where this goes wrong

The free tool for this

There is no calculator that answers this one honestly, so here is the free set: eight calculators for rates, quotes, invoices, splits, prices and fees. They run in the page and send nothing anywhere.

If you would rather not build it yourself

Habit Ledger is an undated printed-and-digital year: a month per page, the two-minute column, a monthly pattern view and a page for the rule you set. Habit Ledger is $9. See it on the shop, and there is a plain page about it here: what it holds.

Questions people actually ask

How long until it feels automatic?

It varies by person and by habit, and the honest answer is that it does not matter much - what matters is that missing one day does not turn into missing the month.

Can a spreadsheet replace paper?

If you will actually open it daily, yes. If not, a printed month on the wall beats a perfect file you never look at.
